C-KAST 5MG tablet (montelukast sodium) is primarily used for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma and for the relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever and year-round allergies). It is not a rescue medicine for acute asthma attacks.
Key Uses:
The active ingredient, montelukast, is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) in the body that cause inflammation and narrowing of the airways.
Its Main Uses Include:
- Asthma Management: It helps to prevent wheezing, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and coughing caused by asthma. It is a long-term control medication, not for immediate relief of an ongoing asthma attack.
- Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB): It is used to prevent breathing problems that occur during physical activity (exercise-induced asthma).
- Allergic Rhinitis Symptoms: It relieves symptoms of seasonal and perennial (year-round) allergies, such as sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, and itchy, watery eyes.
Important Considerations:
- Dosage: The tablet is usually taken once a day in the evening for asthma and for some allergy symptoms. For exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, it may be taken at least 2 hours before exercise, as advised by a doctor, but never more than one dose in a 24-hour period.
- Acute Attacks: It will not stop an asthma attack that has already started. A fast-acting rescue inhaler should be used for sudden symptoms.
- Mental Health Warning: Montelukast may cause serious mood or behavior changes in some patients. You should stop taking it and contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms like agitation, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts.
- Consult a Doctor: Always follow your doctor’s instructions for dosage and duration. Do not stop taking the medication abruptly without consulting your healthcare provider, even if you feel better.
