Cimetidine
Acidity & Ulcers
Your medicine is known as a histamine H2 antagonist. It works by reducing the natural production of acid in the stomach.
Adults: Oral: Stomach/intestinal ulcer: 800 mg daily, taken as a single dose at bedtime or 400 mg at breakfast and at bedtime OR 200mg three times with meals and 400mg at bedtime. Children: Not recommended. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustment.
Diarrhoea, dizziness, rash and tiredness, breast enlargement in men, blood changes kidney disorders, liver disorders inflammation of the pancreas, fever, headache, aching muscles, aching joints, heart effects and impotence. All these side effects should disappear when treatment is stopped. Very rarely allergic reactions (rash, itching, shortness of breath and low blood pressure) and hair loss have occurred.
Warfarin, phenytoin, theophylline, amitriptyline, diltiazem, lidocaine, nifedipine, metoprolol, procainamide, glipizide, metformin, Ciclosporin, Tacrolimus, Atazanavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole, or posaconazole, carmustine, fluorouracil, epirubicin or radiation therapy, morphine
It is used to treat and relieve the symptoms of stomach and duodenal ulcers, oesophageal reflux disease and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Do not take Cimetidine if you are allergic to cimetidine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Cimetidine if you have an illness that could cause a fall in blood cell count.
If you are middle aged or older, with new or recently changed indigestion symptoms (e.g. stomach pain or discomfort, heartburn). Other causes of your symptoms such as stomach cancer, should be excluded.
If you are elderly, have a chronic lung disease, have diabetes or are immunocompromised. You are at greater risk of getting pneumonia (lung infection) while taking Cimetidine.
If you have to go to a doctor, dentist or hospital for any reason, tell them that you are taking Cimetidine, this is especially important if you are likely to have an anaesthetic or an operation.
